What Is A Pre-cut?

Jelly Rolls, Layer Cakes, Charm packs, Mini charms or Candies, Turnovers, Fat Quarters, Fat Eighths…what do these mean? Pre-cuts are exactlay what the name sounds like, pre-cut fabric instead of yardage cut from the bolt.

The Sizes

Each available precut has a specific set of dimensions associated to them and they do not change, so it’s easy to understand what is being asked in a given pattern if precuts are being used.

There are different variations of each type of precuts, like blenders, solids, or coordinating prints all from the same collection. Precuts are a great way to get the full range of coordinating prints from a collection, without having to buy a lot of yardage. They’re also an easy way to save time cutting out your projects, and they won’t take up as much space in your sewing room as a stack of fabric cut from the bolt. Plus they are just do darn cute!

French Fat Quarter

A French Fat Quarter 19″ x 27″ and is a little bit bigger than a fat quarter. These are great for getting a few more pieces cut out than you would get from a fat quarter.

Mini Charms

Mini Charms also known as Candies are a miniature version of Charm Packs and Layer cakes. The squares in Mini Charms or Candies are 2 1/2″ and are great for smaller projects like doll quilts or pot holders.

Turnover

Turnovers are a stack of precut triangles, usually cut from 6″ squares. These are great for creating stars, or piecing different blocks using half square triangles.
